“I’m experiencing pain in my feet; do I need orthotics?”

As with all other parts of the body, there can be a number of causes for foot and ankle pain. Because of this, there is also a wide variety of treatments at our disposal. Orthotic prescription is just one of those options.

The first step is to book an appointment with one of our experienced physiotherapists for an assessment. Your consultation will involve a full assessment of your foot biomechanics, foot shape, gait, plus your activity and footwear requirements. The physiotherapist will also assess any other areas of pain or discomfort which may be related to your foot complaint. With this knowledge, your physiotherapist can advise whether orthotics are required and explain the best option(s) for you.

Orthotics work by adjusting the loads through our foot and ankle. Their primary function is to reduce pain, improve comfort & enhance our ability to walk, work or exercise. They achieve this by directing load through the bigger, stronger muscle groups and joints, and relieving load on the smaller, weaker areas. They are particularly effective in treating foot and ankle overuse injuries but can be effective in helping to treat a variety of injuries.
