World Physiotherapy Day 2025

Every year on September 8th, physiotherapists around the world come together to celebrate World Physiotherapy Day – a chance to shine a spotlight on the important role that our profession plays in helping people live healthier, more active lives.

This year’s theme is “Healthy Aging“, which may on first glance suggest that this is a theme solely for people who are older, but it’s not. We’re all aging, and the focus of this campaign is to encourage us all to move and enjoy our bodies in every way we can to promote lifelong health.

What Does “Healthy Aging” Mean?

Healthy aging is about more than just living longer, it’s about living well.

It means maintaining strength, balance, mobility, and independence as we get older, so that we can continue doing the things that bring us joy, meaning and connection – whether that’s our job, our hobbies or our day-to-day functioning and comfort.

Physiotherapists help people of all ages to optimise their movement and strength, but we play a particularly vital role in helping older adults to manage health conditions, recover from surgery or injury, and prevent future issues such as falls, frailty or chronic pain.

How We Support Older Adults Every Day

At Mid West Physiotherapy, we care for many older adults in our community. Our patients range widely in terms of age, ability and health, but our work focuses on helping each person to maximise their physical potential, so they can lead active, fulfilling lives with confidence and comfort.

Every treatment plan is tailored to the individual. Our approach is grounded in compassion, education, and empowerment – we’re here to guide, support and resource each person that we meet.

Here are some of the common reasons that older adults come to see us:

  • Strength optimisation / injury prevention
  • Performance optimisation e.g. sports like golf, tennis etc.
  • Chronic pain management (arthritis, back pain, etc.)
  • Reduced movement or stiffness issues
  • Decreased strength or fitness levels
  • Rehabilitation before or after surgery
  • Inflammation and joint conditions
  • Falls prevention and balance training
  • Specific conditions such as osteoporosis

Why Awareness Matters

It’s very important to us that our patients know that physical activity has huge impact on how we age, and no matter what age you are, it’s never too late to make positive changes.

The key to healthy aging is to know what type of activities suit your body, and (importantly) which don’t. With the right knowledge and support, movement can be safe, enjoyable and life-enhancing at any age.

Our role as physiotherapists is to help our patients to optimise their physical strength, reduce their risk of injury and support any physical challenges related to aging. Physiotherapy can help you to move better, feel better, and live better, and we’re here to help if ever you need any help or support.
